Bill would ban check marketing ploy
Every month sign printer Mark Pocan receives a check or two that he sends to the trash, not his bank. The checks mailed to the elderly and businesses like Pocan 's offer small amounts like $3.25 but come with a catch tucked away in their small print -- cashing the checks signs unwary recipients up for costlier services like Web site hosting or other services that can run as high as $50 a month.
