Dial up Internet service providers were at the forefront of the Internet service industry as soon as Internet service became commonly used in households across the country. No longer was it necessary to go to a college campus, library or other public building with Internet access; instead, people could surf the web right from the comfort of their own homes. The problem facing many dial up Internet service providers today is competition from faster, more reliable service options. But in many places, especially rural areas, dial up Internet service providers continue to be an important part of Internet access because of limited access by any other means. Many of the companies offering dial up service are working to make sure customers stay happy with the service so that they won't be anxious to leave their dial up Internet service providers as other options become available.

One way dial up Internet service providers are making their service better is by speeding up the connection. The major attraction to DSL and other Internet connection options is the speed with which information loads. When the Internet is "lagging" and loading web pages and e-mails takes longer than it should, some people are immediately tempted to increase their computer's capabilities. However, if your Internet connection is handled by any of the many dial up Internet service providers, the lack of speed can probably be attributed to the service provider - not your computer. For example, even slower computers can receive information at 56K, while it's not uncommon for some dial up Internet service providers to have equipment limited to 30K or even less. That means that the computer is receiving information as fast as the ISP allows.

Some dial up Internet service providers are upgrading equipment to increase the speeds at which customers can expect to receive information. While these increases are nothing near the speed to be expected from DSL or some of the other connections now available, it is an improvement over the speeds that rural customers have been accustomed to.

Offering more telephone numbers is another way dial up Internet service providers are striving to offer better Internet connections. Few customers now face delays while trying to log in simply because the phone connection is overloaded. Instead, some ISP companies are offering several phone numbers with software that even chooses the one most likely to provide the fastest connection.
