Wireless Broadband Means Fast and Easy Access to the Internet

Our very wired society is quickly cutting cords all over the place, which is why wireless broadband is one development that has people saying good riddance to the "ties that bind them".

No longer is traditional broadband Internet access the only option for people wanting fast, reliable Internet service. The age of wireless broadband is dawning. Before wireless broadband, broadband Internet was brought into homes and businesses mainly through wires from a cable company or telephone company service. Now all you need is WiMAX.

WiMAX is kind of a silly-sounding acronym that stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. It is a standard that makes it possible to get high-speed wireless data transmissions over many miles. So why would you want wireless broadband? Why wouldn't you?

Wireless broadband is being standardized by companies that support WiMAX. People are developing a set of criteria that hardware and software manufacturers can follow to be compatible with WiMAX in part through a WiMAX forum at www.wimaxforum.org.

The idea is to make WiMAX technology easier for consumers to use by creating a standard. Backers want more people to use wireless broadband and hope others will be willing to adopt and implement WiMAX protocols.

WiMAX is different from the 802.11 standard which also deals with wireless broadband data transmissions. Sometimes the old standard is referred to as Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi5. Because WiMAX is a long-range wireless networking standard, the capability is there to deliver wireless broadband to rural areas and other places that don't have the benefit of cable or DSL. Data rates for WiMAX get up to 75 megabits per second.

Wireless broadband puts broadband modems to use to bypass a telephone system, kind of like an amateur radio phone patch only much faster. Wireless broadband is many hundreds of times faster than traditional connections, including cell-phone modems.

Whether you are a business owner or an individual who wants to surf the net in style, check out your local wireless broadband options. As with any source of Internet connectivity, carefully review the companies with whom you do business. Make sure they have the full benefit of cutting edge technology and a technical support system that will really support you. Ask to try out a system that already employs wireless broadband (but be prepared to fall in love, especially if you are still using a dial-up modem).
